I’m a certified shopaholic. It runs in my family, so I come by it honest. However, I’m sure it’s no shocker but inflation has dampened the excitement of my favorite hobby. So now I need to find a hobby that doesn’t involve my debit card. I was browsing through my library and found The Year of Less, and it has inspired me to start three months of less. I want to do a year but honestly, I’m afraid to commit to that, so three months it is.
Here’s How It Works
The concept is pretty easy. I’m not going to buy anything except necessities. I don’t need any more things. I have too many things. Honestly, I’m drowning in things. So why would I go and spend $20 on a new candle when I have twenty unused candles at home? See, it’s an easy concept but I’m a little worried about the execution. But sometimes it’s good to do hard things especially when it will help make a better life for my family.
So, starting February 1st, I’m only buying the things on my allowed and approved shopping list. I put the things that I tend to overspend on my not allowed list. The goal is to spend less and have less. I’m not going full minimalist, but I want to inch a little closer to that. Over consumerism really is a problem for our planet and our bank accounts, and I want to start being more mindful of that.
Saying all of that I’m planning to start my three months of less on February 1st and finish on April 30th. If you want to give this challenge a try with me I would welcome an accountability partner.

What a great idea! This year I am cutting down on purchases too, mainly because the boyfriend and I have everything we need. I’m still making some purchases to make our new house better, but other than that I’m kind of just existing, which is nice. Plus, you get to save all that money you would’ve spent!
Exactly! I’m to the point in my life I don’t need any more things to dust or organize. I’d rather have the money in the bank, hahahaha.
So true! My boyfriend and I take turns reminding each other when we get that itch to reassess and think about whether we really need what we’re looking at or if it will really add value in what we do. Usually the answer is no.
This book looks like just what I need right now! I keep feel like I’m spending money more out of habit than out of wanting the thing I’m getting. Maybe it’s because there aren’t many free third spaces in my area that aren’t outdoors.
I felt the same way! I have to say it’s been refreshing to not buy things. It makes it fun when I actually do splurge now.
