I’ve been in the worst book slump of my life. I just have not been motivated to read for the past month and a half. That’s really unlike me and so it’s been a new experience. So, here’s a few things I’ve learned from my book slump. Let’s discuss it.
I’ve Taken My Goals Too Seriously
I’ve always said that my reading goals aren’t that big of a deal. And ultimately, I know they’re not. A reader is a reader no matter the number of books they read each year. However, I would still put pressure on myself to complete a monthly goal and normally I would complete it. Until one time I didn’t. But guess what the world didn’t end.
I Need More Hobbies
Reading really became my only hobby. Seriously, that’s all I did and at the time I was perfectly happy with that. But now that I don’t have the desire to read, I haven’t really been doing anything (other than doom scrolling on Facebook). And honestly, like all things in life you need balance. So, I want to make it a goal to pick up a new hobby this year. I already have a few in mind.
You Can Burn Out from Something Even Though You Love It
It’s no question that I love to read. And I will always love to read. But burnout happens. We’ve had a few stressful months with a lot of emotional stuff. Sometimes your brain needs a break to process things and that’s absolutely ok. If you’re here reading this because you’re going through something similar just know that time does heal things. You will eventually start to feel like yourself again.
Audiobooks Are a Lifesaver
I knew this already, but I always viewed them as a great way to reach my goals. Now, since I’m not worrying about goals as much, I see them as a great way to consume a story even when I don’t feel like physically reading. It still sparks that part of my brain and keeps me satisfied, but I don’t have to commit to actually sitting down to read.
And those are the things I’ve learned from my book slump.

I switched to talking books when I was in a reading slump – another time I switched to YA – another time I swapped reading for writing – another time I just got magazines form the library and looked at the pictures – each slump never lasted long though… Linda x
Sorry about the slump, but I’m glad you’re exploring options to keep a form of balance in life. My go to hobby is video games, and I stream whenever I’m trying to destress and am finding people just like me. Whatever you end up doing, I can’t wait to hear more. Sending you positive energy!
Audiobooks are the best! I’ve had my weeks when reading just isn’t feeling like fun, but at least the audiobooks are there for me. For me, I’ve definitely noticed that my periods of “slumpiness” with reading tend to align with when I’m feeling super stressed about work, so even when I’m trying to unwind, nothing really works. I hope your slump ends soon, and meanwhile, I think you’re smart to explore other interests and hobbies.
