After a month of dense fantasy reads, I think I need a refresher. I’m going to take a break from The Wheel of Time to read some horror and start two new fantasy series. I’m not doing great at actually completing series so far. Anyhow, let’s get to my May 2026 tbr.
The Silent Companions

Synopsis:
When Elsie married handsome young heir Rupert Bainbridge, she believed she was destined for a life of luxury. But pregnant and widowed just weeks after their wedding, with her new servants resentful and the local villagers actively hostile, Elsie has only her late husband’s awkward cousin for company. Or so she thinks. Inside her new home lies a locked door, beyond which is a painted wooden figure—a silent companion—that bears a striking resemblance to Elsie herself. The residents of the estate are terrified of the figure, but Elsie tries to shrug this off as simple superstition—that is, until she notices the figure’s eyes following her.
The Silent Companions has been on my tbr for quite a while. I think it’s finally time to give it a read. It supposed to be a fun gothic story, and I think that’s just what I need.
The Call of Cthulu

Synopsis:
The story is narrated by Francis Wayland Thurston, who uncovers the unsettling legacy of his late grand-uncle, Professor George Gammell Angell, a specialist in ancient languages. The narrative is structured in three parts, each revealing different aspects of the Cthulhu mythos and the cult that worships this terrifying entity.
At the first of the year, I planned to do a classics reading challenge. I sort of forgot about it until now. The next book on the list is The Call of Cthulu which is great since I’m in a horror mood.
The Bone Ships

Synopsis:
Two nations at war. One prize beyond compare.
For generations, the Hundred Isles have built their ships from the bones of ancient dragons to fight an endless war. The dragons disappeared, but the battles for supremacy persisted.
Now, the first dragon in centuries has been spotted in far-off waters, and both sides see a chance to shift the balance of power in their favor. Because whoever catches it will win not only glory but the war.
I accidently bought The Bone Ships on Kindle one night. It’s been on my tbr but I didn’t plan to commit just yet. But I just finished a book with a maritime theme, and it made me want to read more. So, I guess that was a happy accident.
The Fellowship of the Ring

Synopsis:
The dark, fearsome Ringwraiths are searching for a Hobbit. Frodo Baggins knows that they are seeking him and the Ring he bears—the Ring of Power that will enable evil Sauron to destroy all that is good in Middle-earth. Now it is up to Frodo and his faithful servant, Sam, with a small band of companions, to carry the Ring to the one place it can be destroyed: Mount Doom, in the very center of Sauron’s realm.
I re-read The Hobbit last month in preparation for The Fellowship of the Ring. I do want to take a quick fantasy break to refresh my brain but them I’m excited to start my Tolkien journey.
That’s my May 2026 tbr. What are you reading this month?
