Skyward by Brandon Sanderson Review

Button to purchase Skyward

As I’ve said a million times, sci-fi isn’t usually my thing. But lately I’ve been in a rut. I wanted something different so I gave Skyward a try. I’m glad I did. Let’s discuss.

The remnants of the human race are trapped on a desolate planet. Trying to rebuild a civilization is hard enough, but now they have to fight alien starfighters almost daily. Spensa wants to be a pilot. That dream might just come true after she discovers a crashed ancient ship. She must navigate flight school and find the time to repair her ship. Little does she know, that ship might also have a soul.

My Thoughts on Skyward

Skyward was my first Sanderson novel, but it won’t be my last! I devoured this book. It was action packed. There was never a dull moment.

Next, I loved Spensa. It wasn’t an instant love, but it happened. She is a bit of an odd duck, but I appreciated a quirky main character. It was refreshing. I was skeptical at first, but she really developed throughout the story. I can’t wait to see how she develops throughout the rest of the series.

While Spensa was our main character there were so many awesome side characters. Each classmate had a distinct personality. I loved the bonds that developed throughout the book.

I couldn’t mention side characters and not mention M-Bot and Doomslug. M-Bot is an AI ship that has an over the top personality. He is so sassy and fun. The book wouldn’t be the same without him.

Doomslug is a bit more subtle. She doesn’t have as many scenes, but she’s an attention stealer. She is absolutely adorable. I started scouring the internet for Doomslug merch. If anyone knows of any let me know!

I’m really glad I got out of my comfort zone to read Skyward. I want to give more sci-fi a try, so let me know your favorites in the comments!

My Rating: 4/5
