Just like in real life, animal companions can add a lot of joy to a story. And recently, I’ve read a lot of stories with animals that I just love. So here are a few of my favorite bookish animal companions.
DoomSlug
My number one favorite animal companion is DoomSlug from Skyward. I don’t think I would like Skyward as much if DoomSlug wasn’t involved. She doesn’t talk. She just makes these cute little whistle noises. Later in the book she becomes important to the plot, so I won’t say much more. And for my birthday my husband gave me a DoomSlug plush and t-shirt.
Mephi
Mephi is the reason I stuck with The Bone Shard Daughter. It was good in the beginning, don’t get me wrong, but he was the highlight of the story. I loved him. He’s otter like, but he also has horns. He’s just the cutest thing ever. It’s also a plus that I ended up really loving this book.
Mr. Kindly
If you’ve been around the bookish internet very long, I’m sure you’ve heard about Mr. Kindly. He is the cat made of shadows in the Nevernight Trilogy. Unlike, Mephi and DoomSlug, Mr. Kindly isn’t necessarily cute. He’s sarcastic and bitter, but he is loyal. He doesn’t do normal cat things. But I still love him.
OreSeur
Lastly, I want to talk about OreSeur. He isn’t technically an animal. He is a kandra that can take the shape of any body. However, for a majority of the Mistborn series he takes the shape of an animal. He doesn’t get along with Vin at first, and Vin doesn’t like him either. But throughout the story their friendship grows, and he becomes a really likeable character.

I recently read The Ten Thousand Doors of January and the main character has a puppy named Bad (short for Sinbad if I remember correctly).
I LOVE ANIMAL COMPANIONS!! DoomSlug, Mr. Kindly (and Eclipse, too 🥰), and OreSeur are definitely up there among my own favorites, and that plushie might just be the cutest thing I’ve ever seen 😍
My favorite animal companion by far is probably Faithful, though, from Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness Quartett. Like Mr. Kindly, he’s a cat, and he has the most amazing sense of snarky humor! And of course, being owl-obsessed, I also really love Hedwig from Harry Potter 😂
