Ranking the Mistborn: Era 1 Series

So, it’s time to rank another Cosmere series. A couple of weeks ago I ranked The Stormlight Archives series, and after popular demand I’m here today to rank Mistborn: Era 1. Let’s dive in.

The Hero of Ages

The Hero of Ages is the last book in the series, and in my opinion it’s easily the best. All of the world and character building really payed off in this one. Plus, more characters become central to the plot. I loved Spook and Sazed points of view. They become an integral part of the story. And I absolutely loved the way Sanderson handled the chosen one trope. He took a familiar storyline and turned it on its edge.

Mistborn: The Final Empire

Mistborn started a little slow. The magic system was so unlike anything I had ever read, so it took some time to adjust to it. I also had to warm up to Vin a bit. But once she met Kelsier and the other members of the crew her personality really came to life. And the thing that really drew me into this story was the political machinations. There were so many things about the government and nobility that really hooked me in and made me want to continue this story.

The Well of Ascension

The Well of Ascension had second book syndrome. There was a whole lot of set up. And the characters were still building. Vin and Elend’s relationship were in the early stages of development and could have used a bit more depth. And there was a whole lot of miscommunications that begin to feel unnecessary. But boy, did that ending change things. There was a major plot twist that hooked me, and really changed the direction of this series.

So that’s how I rank Mistborn Era: 1. What’s your thoughts? How would you rank it? Let me know in the comments.
