I’m about halfway through The Devils by Joe Abercrombie and it made me remember how much I love grimdark fantasy. And it’s making me miss A Song of Ice and Fire. It’s the series that really got me into fantasy. I sort of jumped off the deep end with that one, but it worked. I’ve briefly considered giving it a reread. It just frustrates me that the series isn’t finished, and I don’t know if it ever will be.
Another issue is that the series is big. It took me almost a year to read it the first time and I’m even busier now than before. I have so many unread books on my tbr and it feels like I’m wasting time to start it again. I’ve never watched the show all the way through so I might give that a try. I know the ending was controversial but I kind of want to watch it. I want to be mad too, haha. And it will get me back into Westeros.
If you’ve made it this far thank you for listening to my rambling. I wrote this with a purpose. I need recommendations for fantasy books in the same vein as A Song of Ice and Fire. Give me all of your gritty, grimdark, politically fueled epic fantasy suggestions. I’m up for anything.

I wondered about this too and decided that as it was unlikely to ever be finished, that it wasn’t really worth it. I watched the TV series and I quite enjoyed the ending so I’m happy with that. I haven’t got rid of the books though so I could always change my mind 😀
I say if that’s what your gut is telling you to do, go for it!

If you’re so inclined, then sure, why not? For me, I would only pick up the series again if there’s at least a publication date shared for the next book in the series. I loved the books when I read them, but I can’t see spending all that time all over again if the series is never actually going to be finished. (i did watch the TV version all the way through to the end, but I’m still holding out for a book ending!) My other fantasy reading tends to skew toward urban/contemporary these days, but the ones that comes to mind are the Witcher series (I made it through 3 out of 8 books, but I know many people love these), and The Goblin Emperor (not really a series, although there’s a related spin-off series).
