DNF Diaries: Gardens of the Moon

So, I started my DNF Diaries as a way to keep up with books I’ve dnfed this year and I haven’t done a great job of keeping up with it. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sneaking a few of these in the rotation so I’ll be caught up by the end of the year. Let’s talk about why I dnfed Gardens of the Moon.

Synopsis

The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, ancient and implacable sorcerers. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen’s rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins.

For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners, and for Tattersail, surviving cadre mage of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the many dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, yet holds out. It is to this ancient citadel that Laseen turns her predatory gaze.

However, it would appear that the Empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister, shadowbound forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand…

My Thoughts on Gardens of the Moon

It’s no secret that Malazan Book of the Fallen is a massive and complicated series. Some people have pages of notes dedicated to this book alone. I like the idea of a completely engrossing series. I like nothing better than to get swept away to another world and that’s what fantasy does best. Especially epic fantasy. But I’ve started Gardens of the Moon four different times, and I just can’t make it stick. Granted I am a new mother, so this is probably a horrible time to start this series. So right now, I’m chalking this up to not for me, but I can’t say that it’s a bad book.

Will I Try Again?

Maybe in eighteen years or so after my daughter is grown. I imagine that’s when I’ll finally have some free time to fit it in, hahaha.

If this series doesn’t intimidate you, I’m selling my copy of Gardens of the Moon over on my Pangobooks shop. It’s practically brand new because I chickened out like three chapters in.
