“Do this in remembrance of me.”
As a church kid, I’ve had communion countless times in my life. I’ve heard these words before. I’ve read them on the communion table at church nearly every Sunday. Somehow though they have never connected with my heart until I reread Luke 22:19. It says, “And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” It’s easy to get caught up in the ritual aspect of communion. You have to pass the grape juice and, heaven forbid, you spill it on your church clothes. Then you grab the bread and make sure your neighbor has one. You’re wrapped up in the moment and forget what it’s all about. Just like everyday life. We forget to live for Christ. We lose the plot.
It’s easy to do that with Easter too. There are eggs to hunt, Easter baskets to buy, and chocolate to eat. It’s easy to forget the cross. Now don’t get me wrong there’s nothing wrong with any of that. I know that’s a controversial opinion please don’t attack me. But we just need to remember who and what we’re celebrating. We’re celebrating a man that was betrayed by his disciple (and loved him anyway), was crucified for our sins, and three days later rose from the grave to give the world hope. So, this Easter let’s do it in remembrance of Him. Better yet, let’s live life in remembrance of Him.
Wishing you and yours a happy Easter!
