Magic Lessons Review

After I watched Practical Magic two, I knew I wanted to read this series. Let’s get into my thoughts on Magic Lessons.

Synopsis

Where does the story of the Owens bloodline begin? With Maria Owens, in the 1600s, when she’s abandoned in a snowy field in rural England as a baby. Under the care of Hannah Owens, Maria learns about the “Nameless Arts.” Hannah recognizes that Maria has a gift and she teaches the girl all she knows. It is here that she learns her first important lesson: Always love someone who will love you back.

When Maria is abandoned by the man who has declared his love for her, she follows him to Salem, Massachusetts. Here she invokes the curse that will haunt her family. And it’s here that she learns the rules of magic and the lesson that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. Love is the only thing that matters.

My Thoughts on Magic Lessons

Magic Lessons was great. Heartbreaking but great. I loved reading about where the Owen’s women, and the curse, began. Maria was a great main character. I loved following her through her early years in England, through her teen years in Curacao, and into adulthood in Salem.

It’s interesting to see how Maria’s snap decision shaped her life and the Owen’s lives forever in so many ways. But ultimately, my favorite part of the story was Faith. From the beginning of the book, we watched Maria grow up and into a mother but then we got to watch Faith grow up. And to see how the violence and harshness of the Puritan world shaped and changed her was profound. That’s the thing with this book. It reads like Practical Magic feels. Yes, there are high stakes but then there are cozy comforting family moments. It feels authentic and it feels like life with just a sprinkling of magic thrown in. I can’t say enough good things about it. I’m so ready to start the next one.

My Rating: 4/5
