Last year, before I started Wildwood Reads, I did a post on my other blog called the TBR Chapter Challenge. Basically, when my physical tbr gets too big I get a little overwhelmed. I decided to do this chapter challenge so that I will actually read the books on my shelf. Plus, I like to see how well I know my reading taste.
The way this works is I choose three books that I’m interested in. I will tell you my initial thoughts and why the book caught my interest. Then I will read a chapter and tell you my thoughts after that. Lastly, just for a little fun, I will try to predict what I think my rating will be when I finish the book. And once I finish all three books, I’ll do a wrap up post with my final thoughts and ratings. So let’s get to it.
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Initial Thoughts: I’ve noticed Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell everywhere, but I didn’t really know what it was about until I watched Christy Anne Jones’s video on Youtube. She said it reminded her of a Jane Austen novel, but with magic. And that was enough to draw me in.
After the Chapter Thoughts: I find with a lot of classic novels, I have to give myself time to get used to the writing style. I think that’s going to be the same with this one. Plus, there are a lot of footnotes to digest as well. I’m really interested in the setting as well as the magic. Hopefully, it will pick up quickly enough to keep my interest.
Rating Prediction: 3/5. I think I will like it once the action gets going, but it is lengthy which is mildly intimidating.
The Fifth Season

Initial Thought: I have heard so many things about The Fifth Season and I have a fear of missing out. I’ve also heard there is a little sci-fi element in there as well that I’m interested in. And I used to love dystopian novels and I hope this rekindles that love.
Thoughts After the Chapter: Wow. The second person point of view is startling. I’m not sure that I’ve ever read a full-length novel in that point of view. The author throws us right into the events so again it’s a little jarring. But the world is gritty, and I find that intriguing.
Rating Prediction: 4/5. If I can get used to the point of view, I think I will really like this one.
Nick

Initial Thoughts: Nick seems like such a fun idea. I loved The Great Gatsby, and I would like to learn a little more about Nick.
Thoughts After the Chapter: I still love the time period. I really am a sucker for a good historical fiction. I’m interested to see how well the author develops Nick. Is he still going to have the same characteristics of the original? I really hope the love interest brought up in chapter one isn’t the focus of the whole story. I want more depth that that.
Rating Prediction: 4/5
Now that we’ve discussed my picks for my tbr chapter challenge it’s time for me to get to reading. If you’ve read any of these let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
