Physical Reading Journal vs. Digital Reading Journal

I’ve kept a reading journal for a couple of years now, and I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve been keeping a bullet journal style one, but last month I found a digital reading journal for my iPad. Today I just wanted to talk about the pros and cons of both. It’s hectic keeping two journals at one time, so I’m trying to narrow down what I want to do next year. Here are my thoughts so far.

Digital Reading Journal

digital reading journal

Pros:

  • Pages are already structured and ready to go
  • Fun prompts and challenges
  • Gives room to include reviews
  • Several book lists available
  • Fun to use
  • Easy to use
  • Quick, but effective
  • Can be printed

Cons:

  • Not fully customizable
  • Must have Apple Pencil and IPad

Physical reading Journal

Pros:

  • Fully customizable
  • Helps creativity
  • Relaxing
  • Need limited supplies
  • Satisfying at the end of the year
  • Fun

Cons:

  • Time Consuming
  • Easy to run out of ideas

So those are a few of the pros and cons I’ve come up with. I really enjoy both methods of journaling for different reasons. My biggest suggestion when choosing a journal is to go with what feels right for you.

And if you’re interested in a digital reading journal Etsy has a ton to choose from.

  1. I’ve been wanting to do a digital journal as well. As you said, physical journals are extremely time consuming and as someone who works full time and is also taking online courses there’s just no time!

  2. This is actually something I’ve been thinking about doing! I think it would help the choas with more arcs and pre-orders too. I’m going to check out the digital way!

  3. I love both, they each have their different formats that make them fun! <3 I've been trying to get back into digital journaling but just haven't found the time, I love it because it can be customized in any way I like.
