It’s February. Which means that it’s time for my February 2023 tbr. January was a fun reading month. I think it’s going to be hard to top it, but I do have some books that I’m really excited about lined up this month. So, let’s get to it.
Edgedancer

Synopsis:
Three years ago, Lift asked a goddess to stop her from growing older–a wish she believed was granted. Now, in Edgedancer, the barely teenage nascent Knight Radiant finds that time stands still for no one. Although the young Azish emperor granted her safe haven from an executioner she knows only as Darkness, court life is suffocating the free-spirited Lift, who can’t help heading to Yeddaw when she hears the relentless Darkness is there hunting people like her with budding powers. The downtrodden in Yeddaw have no champion, and Lift knows she must seize this awesome responsibility.
I thought I would need a break from fantasy after completing the Wax and Wayne series last month. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. So, I want to pick up Edgedancer this month. I’m ready to dive back into The Stormlight Archives.
Episode Thirteen

Synopsis:
Fade to Black is the newest hit ghost hunting reality TV show. Led by husband and wife team Matt and Claire Kirklin, it delivers weekly hauntings investigated by a dedicated team of ghost hunting experts.
Episode Thirteen takes them to every ghost hunter’s holy grail: the Paranormal Research Foundation. This brooding, derelict mansion holds secrets and clues about bizarre experiments that took place there in the 1970s. It’s also famously haunted, and the team hopes their scientific techniques and high tech gear will prove it. But as the house begins to reveal itself to them, proof of an afterlife might not be everything Matt dreamed of. A story told in broken pieces, in tapes, journals, and correspondence, this is the story of Episode Thirteen–and how everything went terribly, horribly wrong.
While I’ve really been enjoying fantasy, I’ve also been wanting to pick up more horror. And the next two books that I’m going to talk about have me so excited to dive in. I’m on the search for a good ghost story, and Episode Thirteen sounds so promising. I love watching paranormal shows. So, to get a book centered around a paranormal tv show sounds like the perfect book for me.
The Spite House

Synopsis:
Eric Ross is on the run from a mysterious past with his two daughters in tow. Having left his wife, his house, his whole life behind in Maryland, he’s desperate for money–it’s not easy to find steady, safe work when you can’t provide references, you can’t stay in one place for long, and you’re paranoid that your past is creeping back up on you.
When he comes across the strange ad for the Masson House in Degener, Texas, Eric thinks they may have finally caught a lucky break. The Masson property, notorious for being one of the most haunted places in Texas, needs a caretaker of sorts. The owner is looking for proof of paranormal activity. All they need to do is stay in the house and keep a detailed record of everything that happens there. Provided the house’s horrors don’t drive them all mad, like the caretakers before them.
The job calls to Eric, not just because there’s a huge payout if they can make it through, but because he wants to explore the secrets of the spite house. If it is indeed haunted, maybe it’ll help him understand the uncanny power that clings to his family, driving them from town to town, making them afraid to stop running.
I’ve seen The Spite House everywhere. And all someone had to say was haunted house and I’m in. It sort of gives off The Shining vibes, and I’m hoping that’s what I’m going to get. I’m so ready to sink my teeth into a good ghost story.
Black Paradox

Synopsis:
Four people intent on killing themselves meet through the suicide website Black Paradox: Maruso, a nurse who despairs about the future; Taburo, a man who is tortured by his doppelganger; Pii-tan, an engineer with his own robot clone; and Baracchi, a woman who agonizes about the birthmark on her face.
They wander together in search of the perfect death, fatefully opening a door that leads them to a rather bizarre destiny…
I don’t have much to say for this one other than it’s Junji Ito, and I need it in my life lol.
ReDawn

Synopsis:
“Don’t trust their lies. Don’t trust their false peace.” That is the warning that Alanik of the planet ReDawn gave the human pilot Spensa after Alanik’s ship crash-landed on Detritus. While accepting an invitation to meet with her people’s enemy, the Galactic Superiority, Alanik heard Spensa’s cry for help across the vastness of space, and she used her cytonic powers to hyperjump her ship to the source of that cry. What she found there was a shock—a whole planet of free humans fighting against the Superiority. Were they the allies her people desperately needed?
When she recovered from her injuries and met the friendly humans Jorgen and FM of Skyward Flight, she found that her warning to Spensa had gone unheeded by the government of Detritus, and they were considering a peace overture from the Superiority. Now having returned to ReDawn, Alanik is dismayed to learn that her own people are falling into the exact same trap.
The faction in ReDawn’s government that wants to appease the Superiority has gained the upper hand. With Alanik’s mentor, Renakin captured, she has no one to turn to but Jorgen, FM, and their friend Rig. An ancient technology may have the power to save both of their planets from disaster, but can they discover its secrets before it’s too late?
I need to stop procrastinating and finally pick up Cytonic. And before I pick up Cytonic, I need to read ReDawn. I’ve adored this series from the beginning, but I keep putting it to the back burner. But with rumors that the last book might be released next year I need to get caught up.
