Bone White

After reading Rosemary’s Baby I have been in a horror mood. So, when I saw Bone White on Kindle Unlimited, I knew I wanted to give it a read. Let’s get into my review.

Synopsis

You should not be here . . . Paul Gallo sees the report on the news: a disheveled loner in the remote hamlet of Dread’s Hand, Alaska, calmly admits to the murder of eight hikers and agrees to lead authorities to his victims’ graves. It’s the same bit of unsettling wilderness where Paul’s twin brother, Danny, vanished a year ago. Assuming that Danny’s remains will be among the exhumed bodies, Paul arrives to find Dread’s Hand far from welcoming. Locals talk of superstitions, legends, and a devil that steals souls. Wooden crosses, staked in the frozen ground, cordon off the woods to keep what’s in there from coming out. Most troubling, no one can explain exactly what happened to Danny. As Paul searches for answers, the true horrors of Dread’s Hand close in around him. The most chilling mystery of all may be how to get out of there alive.

My Thoughts on Bone White

Bone White is a great winter read. I wish I had read it a couple of months earlier to enhance the atmosphere a little. I don’t want to go into too much detail with this review because this is a less you know the better type of story. I’ll give you the gist of the story and a few buzz words. But you really need to experience it for yourself.

It starts off following a missing persons case in the remote Alaskan wilderness and a potential serial killer. Sounds cut a dry, but it goes much deeper than that. By the end Malfi incorporated a lot of folk horror into the story. I really loved that aspect and it took the story further than I expected at first glance. My only issue was that it wrapped up so quickly. It left me wanting more. I wanted to explore the folk horror in depth. But overall, it was a hair-raising read set in a harsh winter climate. It will chill you in more ways than one.
