Black Sheep was the perfect answer to my book hangover that Rosemary’s Baby caused. Honestly, Black Sheep is in the same vein as Rosemary’s Baby. and I enjoyed that immensely. So, let’s get to my review.
Synopsis
Nobody has a “normal” family, but Vesper Wright’s is truly…something else. Vesper left home at eighteen and never looked back–mostly because she was told that leaving the staunchly religious community, she grew up in meant she couldn’t return. But then an envelope arrives on her doorstep. Inside is an invitation to the wedding of Vesper’s beloved cousin Rosie. It’s to be hosted at the family farm. Have they made an exception to the rule? It wouldn’t be the first time Vesper’s been given special treatment. Is the invite a sweet gesture? An olive branch? A trap? Doesn’t matter.
Something inside her insists she go to the wedding. Even if it means returning to the toxic environment she escaped. Even if it means reuniting with her mother, Constance, a former horror film star and forever ice queen. When Vesper’s homecoming exhumes a terrifying secret, she’s forced to reckon with her family’s beliefs and her own crisis of faith in this deliciously sinister novel that explores the way family ties can bind us as we struggle to find our place in the world.
My Thoughts on Black Sheep
This book was perfection. I’m afraid to admit it but I might have liked it even better than Cackle. It’s the cult horror I’ve been looking for after all the others let me down. I liked the approach Harrison took because Vesper is disillusioned with the cult but at the same time she misses her home. Just maybe not her mother. That created an odd juxtaposition between creepy and cozy. Until the end. The end creeped me out and there is a scene at one of the dinners that I just can’t get it out of my head. Ick.
And honestly, this book kept me guessing for the most part. There wasn’t a dull moment to be found. I devoured this book. Toward the end I started putting the pieces of the big reveal together, but it didn’t take away my enjoyment of the story. It still had enough shock factor to keep me hooked.
Black Sheep was a creepy atmospheric read that had everything I expected and more.

I loved this one too. So unusual and twisted! Great review.
Thanks!
I loved this one too – quite possibly even more than Cackle if I had to choose.
