April 2024 Wrap Up

It’s time for my April 2024 wrap up. It’s no secret that I’ve been in a reading slump. However, I did manage to finish three books this month, so I’ll call that a win.

The Next Mrs. Parrish

Synopsis:

Amber Patterson Parrish has come a long way from being an invisible wallflower. Her hard work and immaculate planning have paid off now that she’s a prominent socialite. Less than a year Jackson’s tax-evasion scandal, Amber is still at the top of the Bishops Harbor community pecking order. But that freedom is quickly coming to an end. With Jackson getting released from prison, Amber’s time—and money—is vanishing.

Meanwhile, Daphne Parrish left Bishops Harbor after her divorce from Jackson Parrish, swearing she would never go back. But when one of her daughters runs away from home, Daphne agrees to return for the summerOnce out of prison, Jackson swears he’s a changed man, but Daphne knows that he can’t be trusted.

When a ghost from Amber’s past emerges looking for revenge, the three of them find unlikely allies in one another, but who is playing who? When all is said and done, they’ll have to fight tooth and nail for everything they have left in this zero-sum game.

Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics

Synopsis:

As told by Dolly Parton in her own inimitable words, explore the songs that have defined her journey. Illustrated throughout with previously unpublished images from Dolly Parton’s personal and business archives. Mining over 60 years of songwriting, Dolly Parton highlights 175 of her songs and brings readers behind the lyrics.

My Rating: 5/5

My Review: I LOVED this audiobook. It’s told in an interview style and hearing Dolly tell the inspiration behind her songs was so interesting. If you’re a Dolly fan you need to give this one a listen.

Cytonic

Synopsis:

Spensa’s life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell—the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. What’s more, she traveled light-years from home as an undercover spy to infiltrate the Superiority, where she learned of the galaxy beyond her small, desolate planet home.

Now, the Superiority—the governing galactic alliance bent on dominating all human life—has started a galaxy-wide war. And Spensa’s seen the weapons they plan to use to end it: the Delvers. Ancient, mysterious alien forces that can wipe out entire planetary systems in an instant. Spensa knows that no matter how many pilots the DDF has, there is no defeating this predator.

Except that Spensa is Cytonic. She faced down a Delver and saw something eerily familiar about it. And maybe, if she’s able to figure out what she is, she could be more than just another pilot in this unfolding war. She could save the galaxy.

The only way she can discover what she really is, though, is to leave behind all she knows and enter the Nowhere. A place from which few ever return.

  1. I loved the Dolly Parton book!! I listened to it last year and loved it so much. I hope you get out of your slump… I’m heading that way, I fear.

  2. I hope you get out of your reading slump! 3 books is pretty good considering. I’ll be waiting for your thoughts on the Brandon Sanderson book–I’ve been meaning to try something by this author, but I can’t decide where to start!

    1. Thanks! I’ve loved almost everything I’ve read by Brandon Sanderson. I started with Skyward and went from there. But there are a lot of guides on his website that show the best places to start in the Cosmere. I hope you enjoy his work. He’s one of my faves.
