Top Five Books of 2024 (So Far)

It’s been a tough year all around. My reading has been off and it’s been easy to forget that I have read some books that I really love. So that’s what I want to talk about today. Here are my top five books of 2024, so far.

Rosemary’s Baby

Rosemary’s Baby was my first five star read of the year and it’s still going strong as my favorite. I bought this on impulse while we were on vacation and I’m so glad that I did. I loved the psychological dread that this book relied on. It done a perfect job of making me doubt the narrator and her surroundings. It was just sooo good.

Black Sheep

Black Sheep was the cure to my book hangover that Rosemary’s Baby caused. And honestly, it had similar elements that I loved about Rosemary’s Baby. Our narrator wasn’t completely reliable but I loved seeing life from her point of view. This was an odd one because it was creepy and horrifying at times but there was a coziness about it. The mix of those elements is one of the reasons why I love Rachel Harrison as an author.

Middle of the Night

Would I be me if a Riley Sager book wasn’t on this list? Middle of the Night was a great thriller that had paranormal elements that kept me hooked to the end. I guessed the murderer pretty early on but it was still a really enjoyable read.

Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde

I’m shocked that this has made it to my list considering it’s a short story at best. But I loved the Victorian gothic feeling that Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde had. It was so atmospheric. I could almost feel the fog gathering around the street lamps. It was such a good read. I was also shocked that I enjoyed it as much as I did because I knew the main reveal to the story going in. But the atmosphere and feel of it kept me interested.

Assassin’s Apprentice

Lastly, we have Assassin’s Apprentice and I have a feeling this one might get kicked out of it’s spot by the end of the year. I loved the first book but I’ve fallen out of love with the series very quickly. But let’s just focus on book one right now. It was very slow burn but it had a lot of fantasy elements that I really enjoyed. I noticed a bit of plot armor surrounding most of the characters but I loved the story enough to overlook that. It helped me find my groove again and I do appreciate it for that.
