The September House is one of my favorite reads so far, this spooky season and it took me by surprise. Let’s get into my review.
Synopsis
A woman is determined to stay in her dream home even after it becomes a haunted nightmare. When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street, they couldn’t believe it. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee. She is not most people.
Margaret is staying. It’s her house. But after four years Hal can’t take it anymore, and he leaves abruptly. Now, he’s not returning calls, and their daughter Katherine–who knows nothing about the hauntings–arrives, intent on looking for her missing father. To make things worse, September has just begun, and with every attempt Margaret and Katherine make at finding Hal, the hauntings grow more harrowing, because there are some secrets the house needs to keep.
My Thoughts on The September House
I can honestly say that I’ve never read anything like The September House, and I’ve read a lot of haunted house stories. But honestly, it’s even too limiting to call this a haunted house story because it is so nuanced. It started out with a basic haunting with some tongue and cheek humor thrown in, but just when I thought I had everything figured out some darker topics and family secrets were thrown in to spice up an already twisty plotline.
Overall, I think the author took a big, complicated story condensed it down to a bingeable size and absolutely killed the execution. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The September House was a completely addictive read. The only thing I didn’t completely love was the ending. It felt a tiny bit jumbled, but otherwise I had a great time with this one.
My Rating: 4/5

Ooh……I’m not really a scary book reader but this sounds like it has just enough other stuff that I might need to add it to my TBR.
If you give it a try, I hope you enjoy it!
