It’s been way too long since Cj and I have gone anywhere that didn’t involve a doctor’s office. So, we decided to take a day over the weekend and explore our beautiful state. Here’s what we did on our northeast Alabama fall outing.
Little River Canyon
We started our morning with an early breakfast at a classic Alabama fast food chain called Jacks. Seriously, if you’re going to have an outing of any kind in Alabama you’ve got to go there or Huddle House/Waffle House. I don’t make the rules. I suggest the gravy and biscuit from Jacks. It’s never let me down.

After a heavy breakfast, we decided a nice walk would do us some good, so we went to Little River Canyon. Thank God for ramps because I’m still getting the strength in my legs back. But if you haven’t had a major leg injury there are a ton of pretty hiking trails here too. You could spend all day just hiking around the falls.

It was a beautiful slightly chilly day on Lookout Mountain, and it really put me in the fall mood. The leaves weren’t quite as vibrant as normal and there wasn’t much water coming off the falls during this trip because we’re in a drought right now. But it was still a beautiful view, nonetheless.
Desoto Falls

After we stopped at Little River Canyon we started making our way to Mentone. Our end goal that morning was to make it to the Mentone Fall Festival, but we had to sight see along the way. Desoto State Park is just a few miles down the road from Little River Canyon and it’s a must see in the fall.

They had done some work on the beach area since we’d last visited and it was all really nice. We also stopped in at the visitor center to walk around the nature room. It’s a small exhibit that talks about the native plants and animals to this area. I always learn something new when we stop in. There’s also a lot of hiking trails in through the park here as well.
Mentone Fall Festival
We finally made it to the Mentone Fall Festival around lunchtime and almost everything I bought was edible. Don’t take a pregnant woman to a fall festival if you don’t want to buy food. The highlight of the food was the roasted corn. If you’re ever at a festival that has a roasted corn truck do yourself a favor and try it. It’s life changing. Somehow, I forgot to take any pictures, but there were several really cute vendors and art displays. We had a lot of fun.
Dekalb Lake
Lastly, after the fall festival we headed to Dekalb Lake so that my husband could squeeze in a quick fishing trip. I brought my lounge chair and book and enjoyed every minute I could in the warm October sun.

I’m reading The Historian right now. It’s a little slow to start but I think I might end up really enjoying it.

So that was our northeast Alabama fall outing. We’re really blessed to live in such a beautiful area and sometimes it’s a lot of fun just to get out and explore.
