Disappointing Books of 2024

Let’s talk about my disappointing books of 2024. If I’m being completely honest this has probably been the worst reading year of my entire life. It felt like nothing went right. My health was all over the place between pregnancy and my broken legs, so I didn’t feel like reading most of the time. And then the books I did pick up just didn’t hit quite right. So, I have a lot to talk about in this post so let’s get to it.

Interview with the Vampire

Interview with the Vampire frustrated me to the point of anger. It could have been so good, but there were some plotlines added that just didn’t sit right with me. The sexualization of Claudia absolutely disgusted me and I don’t think her plotline added anything to the story. And honestly, there wasn’t much plot to this one anyhow. It was just a whiny main character complaining about his mentor.

My Rating: 1/5

Best of Luck

I said I don’t give many one-star reviews when I wrote this review at the first of the year. And boy, if I’d only known what this year would bring. But honestly, the dialogue was off, the motives were weird and there just wasn’t anything I liked about Best of Luck.

My Rating: 1/5

Goodbye, Things

I wanted to get behind Goodbye, Things but honestly, the author took minimalism a little too far. I was done when he said he only has one towel that he uses to dry his dishes, his hair, and his body.

My Rating: 1/5

In Bloom

In Bloom could have been a great eco horror novel. I expected a swampy, scary algae like creature but that’s not what it gave at all. It felt more like a low budget sci-fi film that just didn’t make sense.

My Rating: 2/5

A Witches Guide to Fake Dating a Demon

I liked the setting of A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon. It felt like a mix of Stars Hollow and Halloweentown combined. But I didn’t love the romance. It felt too insta-love for a book marketed as hate to love romance. The tension just wasn’t there. And the addition of the environmental issue could have been handled better.

My Rating: 2/5

So those are my disappointing books of 2024. I hope your reading year was a lot better than mine. Don’t forget to check back in tomorrow to see the best books of 2024!

  1. Oh no, the bit about the towel sounds like a huge turn-off!! I have such mixed feelings about Interview with the Vampire — I loved it (many years ago) when I first read it, but having tried it again more recently, so much of what you’ve mentioned really bothered me. It may be a book that just hasn’t aged well. (The TV adaptation is terrific, however.) On to better books in 2025!

  2. One towel for dishes, hair, and body? 😂😂😂 Honestly, I’m kind of tempted to read goodbye, things, now, just to see which other minimalism tips are in there… Also, what does the author suggest doing when you’re washing the towel itself? Are you just not supposed to wash your hands or any dishes in that entire time period?
