So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13
I’m no stranger to love. I was blessed to grow up with a loving family and friends. I know how lucky I am to have love in my life, but I didn’t realize just how blessed I was until last year. 2024 was one of the hardest years of my life without a doubt. And it should have been one of the best, but things don’t always work out the way we planned them.
I found out I was pregnant with my first daughter in early April. My pregnancy went relatively well minus a few hard, but expected, symptoms. In July, we started remodeling our house. And I’m talking about pulling out floors and walls and starting from the ground up remodeling. Pregnancy and remodeling is hard enough to deal with, but it gets worse.
In August, we were getting up to go pick out flooring to finish up our nursery. I needed something from my car, so I went out our back door and fell off of our back door. I was five months pregnant at the time, so my first thought was my daughter. I tried to get up, and I couldn’t put weight on either leg. I dragged myself to the door and finally stood up enough to open the door and call for my husband who was taking a shower at the other end of the house. He came and got me and I immediately wanted to go to the hospital to check on the baby.
When we got to the hospital, I found out the baby was fine. But the doctor looked at me and said, “You do realize you have broken both of your ankles, right?” I followed up with an orthopedic doctor and, in actuality, broke my left leg and my right ankle. We figure my leg snapped when I stepped down and that caused me to fall and hit my other ankle on the carport, ultimately breaking it.
That day really did change my life. I was on bed rest for several months. I couldn’t work. I couldn’t walk. I really couldn’t do anything at all for myself. Thankfully, I have a wonderful family that wrapped me up in love and helped me do all the things that I needed to do. My friends and community also reached out to show me that I wasn’t alone. I’ve never felt as much love and concern as I did then. And I’m happy to say I have mostly healed up, and I’m back to my normal life. Or at least my new normal. My baby was born in November, and she is perfectly happy and healthy. I thank God daily for the people in my life and I just hope that I can show everyone I’m in contact with the love that others have shown me.
