Top Five Horror/Thriller Book List

Last week, I updated my top five fantasy series. So today I wanted to take a second and update my top five horror/thriller book list. I read a lot of great horror last year and they’ve been added to the list. Let’s get to it.

Sweeney Todd: The String of Pearls

Last October, I stumbled across The String of Pearls. I had no clue that Sweeney Todd was from a series of penny dreadfuls. From the first sentence I was hooked. The movie adaptation stuck to the book really well, so it felt familiar. But it was different enough to still be thrilling. This is absolutely my favorite horror book as of right now.

The Butcher’s Daughter

The Butcher’s Daughter is one of the best retellings I’ve ever experienced. I read it directly after reading The String of Pearls and it felt like a perfect match to the vibe. It was also unique enough to keep my attention. Go read the synopsis if you want to know more about it, but I also recommend going in knowing as little as possible.

Dracula

When I first read Dracula, I liked it, but I didn’t love it. But then I kept thinking about it and the story kept inching back into my mind. Then I read it again and I loved it. And now I read it at least once a year. It’s a classic for a reason. Now it’s one of my favorite horrors and one of my favorite books in general.

The Last Time I Lied

The Last Time I Lied is my first and favorite Riley Sager book. I’m a sucker for anything that’s set at a summer camp and that twist at the end won me over. I’ve obsessively read Sager’s new releases ever since. I will say he let me down with his last release, but I’m hoping he redeems himself with his next.

Rebecca

Lastly, we have Rebecca. It’s another classic. If you love a gothic thriller this one is for you. Honestly, it’s one of the best gothic thrillers that I’ve ever read. The atmosphere is oppressive from the very beginning, and it just builds and builds. Plus, it widely known to have the best opening line of a book and I highly agree.

So that’s my top five horror/thriller books. Tell me a few of your favorites in the comments.
