We went on a much-needed day trip last week to Birmingham. Here’s what we got up to.
The Flying Biscuit

We started our morning at The Flying Biscuit Cafe. Ultimately, we planned this trip around the zoo, but I knew I had to eat here. Cj and I have been here once before and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

It has a welcoming, fun, and funky atmosphere. It just has the perfect brunch spot vibe.

Plus, it’s a restaurant centered around biscuits, and you just can’t go wrong with that. I got the Freebird Benedict. It was a split biscuit with fried chicken, sausage gravy, and a poached egg on top. I could eat this every day of the week. Thankfully, it’s two hours away from my house.
The Birmingham Zoo

Next up, we took a thirteen-minute drive to the zoo. When we got out of the car at ten o’clock, I realized we had made a foolish mistake. As a lifelong Alabama resident, I should have known better. Please, my friends, listen. Do NOT eat a carb heavy breakfast and decide to do an outside activity in the middle of the Alabama July heat. The soup-like humidity of the Alabama air will draw every ounce of energy out of your body. I got winded walking up the slight incline of the parking lot. By the time I made it to the shade, I was ready to slip into a biscuit induced coma. Nevertheless, I persisted. And in actuality the heat ended up not being too bad. It only felt like 102 instead of the 110 we had the week before.

We had a great time at the zoo. My favorite exhibits were the local exhibits though. It’s so interesting learning about the wildlife around our area. I also appreciate the conservation work that the zoo does. It was fun learning about that.
While the animals were fascinating the plant life kept catching my attention. There were tons of plants around, including the beautiful fig tree pictured above.

I’m not 100% sure what this flower is but they were stunning.

Look at this old guy. I know the picture is a bit blurry but he’s a huge turtle covered in moss.

My toddler’s favorite part of the zoo was the train ride. I think we need to take her on a real train soon.
Barnes and Noble

After spending entirely too much money at the zoo gift shop, I decided I wanted to spend entirely too much money at Barnes and Noble. So, we went to The Summit.

However, by the time we got there I was reaching the point of exhaustion. I couldn’t remember any of the books on my tbr and I couldn’t make myself care about anything, haha. My daughter left with three new books, and I picked up this coloring book. I’m super glad I did though because I’ve had the best time with it.
So that was our Birmingham, Alabama outing. It was great day full of fun, adventure, and maybe a few too many snacks.

Sounds like an excellent, if exhausting day. The biscuits sound good.

I was lovely and exhausting, hahaha.
