I Need More Grimdark Fantasy In My Life

It’s no secret that I’ve been loving fantasy lately, but I’ve especially been craving grimdark. I’ve started rewatching Game of Thrones, but that doesn’t seem to be scratching the itch. I would really love for Wind of Winter to be a thing, but since there’s no release date I’m not getting my hopes up anytime soon. So until then, I’m just going to have to find more grimdark fantasy to love. Let’s get into a few that I want to check out.

The witcher series

I didn’t realize that The Witcher series was considered grimdark, but I was watching Elliot Brook’s grimdark fantasy recommendation and this was high on her list. I have been interested in the series anyhow and that sold me. Plus, my husband loves the games and the show. I’ve even convinced him to read the books with me, which is huge.

First LAw TRilogy

If you search for grimdark fantasy the First Law trilogy is on everyone’s list. I’m a little hesitant to pick this one up because I’ve heard it’s not plot driven. I do like fully fleshed out characters, but I also like to have a strong plot. However, I’ve heard that Joe Abercrombie does some of the best characterization so I will probably give in a shot. And I mean Daniel Greene said that it was even more twisted than the Song of Ice and Fire series, so I’m here for it.

Prince of Thorns

I love a good villain origin story and Prince of Thorns sounds like it would give me what I want. A prince had to suffer and watch his family die. He gave up the throne, but then he comes back to take what was rightfully his with no mercy. I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

A Gathering of Ravens

I haven’t heard a lot about this one, but the cover caught my eye. It is stunning! But then the synopsis checks all my boxes. It’s set in a gothic setting based on mythology, and I couldn’t ask for anything more. Honestly, The Gathering of Ravens is probably the highest on my list right after The Witcher. If I wasn’t reading that with my husband this would be priority. And it sounds perfect for spooky season, which is right around the corner.

I can’t wait to sink my teeth into some gritty, grimdark fantasy. I’m trying to resist the urge to purchase all of these tonight, but I have to pace myself. Let me know in the comments if there are any that I need to add to my list.
