After a rocky start, I finally finished my first book of the year. Let’s get into my review.
Synopsis
Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party–or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, muddle Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones–the most elusive of all faeries–lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she’ll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all–her own heart.
My Thoughts on Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries
For the most part, I really enjoyed Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries. It was a light and airy story that didn’t have a ton of depth, but it did have some cozy vibes. I loved the setting and the lore in this story. It was definitely the highlight for me. And I did like the characters as well. Poe is absolutely the best character, and you will not change my mind.
The only thing I didn’t completely love was the romance. From the synopsis I expected there to be some tension between the “rivals.” I was even hoping for a little hate-to-love romance but that’s not what we got. Bambleby slightly annoyed Emily and that was about it. And then out of the blue there was a confession of love that just felt off. The romance just didn’t work.
But other than that, I enjoyed this read. And I do look forward to picking up the next one.

This is one of my favourite series. I’ve read book 2 and thoroughly enjoyed it – although there is more of the romance. I guess you’d call it a stand offish romance.
Lynn 😀
This has been recommended to me so many times that I’m going to finally read it this year. Glad you enjoyed it desperate the romance!
I hope you love it!
Oops, I meant despite not desperate 😂
i’ve been so intrigued by this one! ahh sorry the romance didn’t work for you, I agree if there’s a “rivalry” there needs to be a nice balance of tension (that’s why I’m worried about potentially not liking the romance but the story sounds so good 😭✨)
For me the cozy vibes made up for the lacking romance! If you end up reading it, I hope you love it!
