Spooky season has begun and I’m craving gothic horror. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was the perfect place to start. Let’s get into my review.
Synopsis
Robert Louis Stevenson’s short novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, first published in 1886, became an instant classic, a Gothic horror originating in a feverish nightmare whose hallucinatory setting in the back streets of London gripped a nation mesmerized by crime and violence. Its revelatory ending is one of the most original and thrilling in English Literature.
My Thoughts on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a classic for a reason. It had everything I love about Victorian horror in it. The setting is atmospheric and oppressive. I could almost feel the creeping fog settling around the gas street lamps. The unsettling feeling in the air helped to enhance the plot beautifully.
The story and the characters also helped build intrigue. I liked that the narrator in the first part of the story was a friend of Dr, Jekyll. He knew something was wrong with his friend but didn’t know what. The really helped to solidify the tension. Then the big reveal still managed to keep me entertained even though I knew the basis of the story going into it.
My Rating: 4/5

This is definitely a book that I need to reread at some point. I read it about 30 years ago but don’t remember many specific details apart from the basic story. I’m glad that you enjoyed it and that it held up well for you.
I hope you enjoy it if you give it a reread!
It’s so nice to see a classic getting attention! I read this one a few years ago, after reading a retelling of the story and wanting to experience the original. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it considering I knew the basis of the story.
