We all know that marketing is a big part of the book business, especially now that the bookish internet is so popular. Book Tok, Bookstagram, and book blogs have a big influence on what books make it and what don’t. So, it makes sense that authors and publishers tend to follow trends. But sometimes the trends go a little too hard and we end up with a million vampire stories that closely resemble Twilight. And I’m so guilty of reading a trend until I’m absolutely burned out on it. So, some of this is my fault, but here are a few fantasy trends that I’m tired of.
Academic Settings
This applies to every genre not just fantasy. The longer I’m out of school the less I care to read about someone in school (even magic schools). I guess I just don’t relate to it as much anymore.
Romantasy
I like romance in my fantasy, don’t get me wrong, but I wouldn’t say I enjoy romantasy. I’ve enjoyed a few of them but I find the ones I’ve experienced to be a little formulaic. Please don’t attack me that’s just my opinion on the ones I’ve read. I’m sure great romantasy exists but it’s just not at the top of my list.
Fae
Please no more fae. Let’s focus on a new mythological creature and give them a break for the moment.
Underdog Main Characters (That Aren’t Actually Underdogs)
This is so common especially in YA books. The main character claims that she’s nothing special. She’s not beautiful, talented, or good with people. And then suddenly she is the only person that can save the world. I don’t necessarily mind this, but I would love to see more true underdog characters.
So those are a few fantasy trends that I’m tired of. This is completely just personal opinion, but I would love to know a few of yours in the comments.

Yessss! Totally forgot about that but 100% agree.
I would like to see more mermaids and unicorns in fantasy books.
