Graveyard Shift Review

Graveyard Shift

Graveyard Shift gave me some mixed feelings. Let’s talk about it.

Synopsis

Every night, in the college’s ancient cemetery, five people cross paths as they work the late shift: a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist, the steward of the derelict church that looms over them, and the editor-in-chief of the college paper, always in search of a story.

One dark October evening in the defunct churchyard, they find a hole that wasn’t there before. A fresh, open grave where no grave should be. But who dug it, and for whom?

Before they go their separate ways, the gravedigger returns. As they trail him through the night, they realize he may be the key to a string of strange happenings around town that have made headlines for the last few weeks—and that they may be closer to the mystery than they thought.

My Full Thoughts on Graveyard Shift

Graveyard Shift was a relatively fun read. It didn’t take very long to get through. I loved the premise of the story. The setting was eerie, and it really enhanced it. I also enjoyed that the characters had distinct personalities and motives. You don’t always get that in a short story. So, in the first few pages I settled in and expected a good spooky, tense read.

Unfortunately, the tension faded toward the middle. I expected this big groundbreaking reveal that never happened. Sure, what took place was gross and a little morally questionable, but it wasn’t this big sinister conspiracy that I expected. It was more of an oops that wasn’t supposed to happen situation.

Ultimately, I didn’t love or hate Graveyard Shift. It was eerie and had potential. I just wanted something with a little more bite.

My Rating: 3/5
