DNF Diaries Revisited: The Wheel of Time

Welp. I’m almost 200 pages into The Dragon Reborn. Apparently, I’m starting The Wheel of Time again. Let’s talk about why I dnfed it and what I think of it now.

Why I DNFED The Wheel of Time.

I read The Great Hunt back in 2022, so it’s been a minute since I’ve even thought about this series. In my review, I gave The Great Hunt three stars, and I said that I didn’t know if I would continue on with it. And I haven’t, until now. I said that the constant traveling really threw me off because I wanted the plot to become more established. Then I wanted to learn more about the Aes Sedai and that didn’t really happen. Lastly, I said that I was still a little confused as to who the good and bad guys were. The names were a bit confusing, and I couldn’t keep them straight. I felt like The Great Hunt suffered from second book syndrome, and I said that if I continued the series I wanted to get a copy of The Wheel of Time Companion. So that’s where I left off all those years ago.

Why I’m giving it another try.

Honestly, I don’t know why I’m giving it another try. It was a bit of a spur of the moment decision. I’ve read a lot of great books lately, but I’ve been missing big epic fantasy series. I want something I can really sink my teeth into and get lost. I think The Wheel of Time can be that. I’ve also had three people mention the series as a recommendation lately and I feel like the universe is tell me that it’s time to give it another try, hahaha.

How it’s going.

I’m 155 pages in and, honestly, I’m really enjoying it. I did have a little bit of a learning curve jumping back in. I had to refamiliarize myself with the characters, but Jordan done a great job at providing context and back story. I’ve also come to appreciate the meandering, immersive writing style. It’s also expanded upon a few storylines that I’m interested in. I hope it continues to go well because I’ve ordered books four and five off of Pangobooks already. I’m also going to have to reorder books one and two to complete my set. I was so dedicated to this dnf that I had actually already sold my copies.

Have you read The Wheel of Time? Tell me your thoughts in the comments?
