I haven’t done a series review in a really long time, but my new reading journal has a spot for it so I might as well. I’ve completed one series in 2025 so I thought we would start this year fresh. I will do a review for completed series going forward until I decide I don’t want to lol. But anyhow, let’s get into my Stormlight Archives series review.
Synopsis
Welcome to the remarkable world of Roshar, a world both alien and magical, where gigantic hurricane-like storms scour the surface every few days and life has adapted accordingly. Roshar is shared by humans and the enigmatic, humanoid Parshendi, with whom they are at war.
My Thoughts on The Stormlight Archives Series
After A Song of Ice and Fire, The Stormlight Archives is probably the biggest fantasy series that I’ve tackled so far. They’re lengthy, complicated books full of nuance and intrigue. However, I would say this series is a bit more approachable than A Song of Ice and Fire. Sanderson’s prose in my opinion is easy to follow without lacking beauty and depth. Honestly, this series is probably one of the most quotable series that I’ve read. Something about the way he strings words together just resonates with me.
But the thing that stands out to me are the characters and the character development. This is where Sanderson shines. Each character has a distinct voice and motive that adds richness and heart to the story. They’re just so relatable. He writes characters that I love to love and characters that I love to hate.
Now the last little caveat I want to talk about is the overall plot of the story. If I’m being honest, I’m not sure where it’s going. There are still a lot of plot points that need to be wrapped up. But this series is the first of two arcs. Each arc will be five books. So, I have an idea of where the story is going but there’s still a lot of ground to cover before we get there. Hopefully, by the end of the second arc I can confidently say what the story is about lol. But until then I will just keep reading about the characters that I love.
My Rating: 4/5
